John C. Gaveney was born on the pioneer homestead in this county on June 30, 1963. He was educated in Arcadia; first at Old Arcadia and then in the new village of Arcadia. He taught for several seasons and then in 1881, entered the University of Wisconsin. He taught again for awhile and then entered law school. His first practice was in Milwaukee but shortly afterward, joined a practice in Stevens Point.

Mr. Gaveney was called home suddenly upon the death of his father in June and his brother in December. The estate interest fell upon his shoulders. At this time he opened a law practice in Arcadia. However, most of his work was dealing with the family farms in Independence and Arcadia. In fact, his love has always been farming.

The first telephone line was started by Gaveney and friends as well as the Ettrick and Northern Railroad. The municipal improvements in Arcadia also benefit from Gaveney's hand.

Since early manhood, Gaveney had been interested in politics. he served as senator from 1901-1905. He served as Trempealeau County Judge in 1930. A great lover of the outdoors, some say that his greatest legal problems were worked out while he was "casting" for trout along the beautiful streams of Trempealeau County.
