Trails System Improvements!
Current Trail System:
With the heavy rain we have been experiencing over the past several years, the trails system at Pietrek Park has been inundated with water thus making it impossible to traverse and remain dry. This has deterred many people from enjoying the trails at the park. County staff and the community have been looking at making improvements to the trail system. Many ideas were brought up about how to get more people to enjoy the floodplain and have them remain dry while doing so. The decision was made to install boardwalks in areas of the trail system where water is standing.
Pietrek Park Boardwalks
With the help of community volunteers, the Elk Rod and Gun Club, and county staff, the boardwalk project began in October of 2019 with the installation of a 142 foot raised, wooden boardwalk. The first part of this project started at the beginning of “Bird Lover’s Loop” located to the east of the bathroom facility. This is a portion of the trail system where water has been present for the entire 2019 season. The first phase of the boardwalk system will allow dry access to the majority of the trails in the park. This preliminary boardwalk is still under construction but is currently accessible and open to public use.
There are several more areas in the trail system where boardwalks will be installed. Construction will resume in the spring of 2020. Pictures of construction are posted above.
